Digging their way to the surface of Earth,
Removing themselves from their protective shells,
Fluttering those wings for the first time,
Flying to the nearest tree or shrub looking for a tasty meal,
Haven't eaten in 17 years, only coming out for one purpose,
Having sex and then dying, what a concept, what a world,
Cicadas chirping their love songs for all to hear, night and day,
Flying from tree to tree looking for their soul mate,
Their one and only love, having sex and then dying after serving their purpose,
Leaving behind the next generation to hatch in 17 years,
The world will be a different place then, just like it was in 1991,
Let us go back even further, 1974, Vietnam, The Cold War, Gerald Ford,
Coming out 17 years later, the end of communism, no more Berlin Wall,
Now, a war on terrorism, a world scared of thy neighbor, A new Cold War,
Yet they sing their happy songs, and have their orgies, this is the life of a cicada,
A life not affected by humans and their mistakes, or their progresses,
But one day, the path humans take will affect those happy songs,
It will put a stop to those moments of group sex,
Those moments of reproduction, another 17 years, Will the world be the same?
Imagine that their ancestors saw ancient empires that no longer exist,
Our life will soon will not exist, but they will keep coming back,
Singing their happy songs, and looking for their one and only,
So happy are the cicadas, so love-hungry are the cicadas, I wish I was a cicada!
One moment in time of pure life for only a few weeks, but living nonetheless!
